A Case for Chad Kelly

Updated: Aug 22, 2018

A lot of buzz in Broncos Country about John Elway acquiring a veteran NFL QB to back up Case Keenum.  I understand the logic and if you truly have a Super Bowl caliber team that would make sense. Truth of the matter is the Broncos lost 11 games last season and would be greatly improved if they simply found a way to win the division and get to the playoffs.

Chad Kelly gets ready to take the field against the Bears

Case Keenum was brought in on a team friendly deal after a stellar 2017 season with the Vikings but the verdict is still out. He has looked solid at camp but Luke warm in games so far. He missed two potential touchdowns last week with errant throws which is a bit surprising considering Case was the second best QB in the NFL last season in completion percentage.

Meanwhile, Chad Kelly has won the hearts of Broncos fans with his grit and awesome play after two games. Against the Vikings Chad completed 14 of 21 passes for 2 TDs and followed that performance against the Bears completing 7 of 9 passes for 90 yards and a TD.  This is not to say Chad Kelly should be the Broncos starting QB in 2018 but he has shown enough potential to be a solid back up this season and the Broncos QB of the future. Bringing in a Teddy Bridgewater or someone like that will only slow his development and push him further down the depth chart.

In all fairness, the Broncos screwed the pooch in last years draft but this season John Elway got it right. This team is loaded with quality future stars including Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton, Royce Freeman, and Phillip Lindsay.  These are the Broncos of the future so why not develop our young QB with them. Broncos fans have patience with young players if they see potential which is why they boo Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. But Chad Kelly is different. The Broncos should spend their money on veteran defensive backs not a quarterback in the coming weeks. Chad Kelly is the future of the Broncos. Count on it!
